A cold night at Waterside Park saw Godalming leave with all three points, courtesy of goals in each half from Graeme Purdy and Mark Watkins. The opening exchanges of the match were fairly even, with both sides struggling to keep the ball on a bobbly playing surface. Former Godalming forward Paul Coventry lined up for Thacham, and he found himself booked early on due to a late tackle. Godalming took the lead after 15 minutes, when Graeme Purdy’s left footed snapshot from the edge of the area found its way into the bottom corner. The hosts reacted well to going a goal down, pressuring the Godalming defence well with both Coventry and Yashwa Romeo going close. Thatcham’s best chance of the half came on 40 minutes when a corner wasn’t dealt with, forcing Zaki Oualah to save, and then a goalline clearance from the follow up.
A much better start to the second half from Godalming immediately resulted in a chance and a goal after only two minutes. Mark Watkins found some space on the left hand side, and cut in and fired low into the corner past James Foster. The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the hosts, and Godalming continued to control the half, with Thatcham limited to long balls into the box, which were comfortably dealt with by the Godalming defence. Godalming had chances to further their lead, with Watkins and sub Jack Mazzone both forcing saves out of Foster.
The win sees Godalming move up to 15th in the league, ahead of Saturdays trip to Merthyr Town.
