Godalming Town’s recent inconsistent form continued as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat against a poor AFC Hayes side with Eugene Asante striking twice in the final 10 minutes to seal victory for the 2nd-bottom placed hosts.
The Gs seemed to lack a certain spark as their performance fell short of the recent mark set after wins against Rugby Town and Bedworth United and they fell behind to an early goal from Ryan Debattista. Jack Howard levelled on the stroke of half-time but Godalming failed to build on that and eventually fell to defeat.
Andy Hunt made two changes from the side that saw off Rugby with Jack Howard and Darren Wheeler coming in for George Frith and Liam Roberts.
The Brook had won 2 of their last 3 home games and took the lead just 4 minutes in when Debattista shot across Richard Ossai and into the far corner for his 9th goal of the season. Asante volleyed into Ossai’s arms moments later before the Gs began to press, and Jack Mazzone prodded wide in the 11th minute.
Wheeler then shot at Melvin Minter before the Hayes stopper denied Howard in the 21st minute. The home defence had already committed some unforced errors and were there for the taking, and Tom Willment headed an excellent Charlie Hutton cross wide before Godalming levelled on the stroke of half time.
Wheeler broke down the left and his shot was weakly parried by Minter, leaving Howard able to beat Jerome Eccleston to the loose ball and stab home for an equaliser that looked likely to push the Gs onto a comfortably victory.
Indeed Will Hutton nearly gave the visitors the lead 5 minutes after the break but his 25-yard strike bounced back off the post via a slight deflection, and Mazzone was offside from the rebound. In the 65th minute Godalming spurned another chance when Cornell headed a Howard cross wide but in truth the Gs weren’t testing the Hayes defence as much as they could, and Debattista rounding Ossai and shooting wide in the 66th minute was a reminder of the threat at the other end.
With 17 minutes to go the visitors appeals for a penalty were ignored when Wheeler was hauled down by Mike Kinsella and things went from bad to worse when, in the 80th minute, the hosts took the lead. A simple ball down the middle from Jordan Berry wasn’t dealt with by the Gs defence and Asante rounded Ossai before rolling the ball home.
Godalming were stunned and 5 minutes later Hayes struck again as possession was surrendered in midfield and again Berry played Asante in, and with only Ossai to beat he calmly claimed his 4th goal in his last 6 games to wrap up the points.
