Ash Utd (H)

Godalming Town 0 – 4 Ash United (H)

This was a disappointing result as the G’s had opportunities early on, which should really have been put away. I sound like a worn-out record, but, when you don’t take your chances it has a habit of coming back to bite you in the bum.

The G’s squad was Jordan Knight in goal, Dom Hardisty and Nick Sowden as the full backs, Kai Bartlett and Ethan Kaiser as the centre-back pairing, Jack Howard, Joe Sowden and Levi Crew in the midfield Kamal McEwan one wing Jeff Yuhou on the other and Pat Cox in the number nine shirt.

The G’s started well when Jeff Yuhou broke through early on having latched on to a poor pass in the visitor’s defence. That meant he was one on one with the visiting keeper. He put the ball a little too far past the keeper and gave himself no chance to convert. Next it was Pat Cox who got in on goal, but he saw the Ash keeper bravely block his low shot with his body. Jordan was called upon to make a great stop on about 25 minutes when Ash started to mount some pressure of their own.

Towards the end of the first half, out of a pretty innocuous looking situation, the Ash number 10 won the ball in the G’s half and advanced towards goal, with only Jordan to stop him, rather as Jeff had done for the G’s in the opening minutes. However, he showed us how to do it by sliding the ball under Jordan as he dived and running on to put the ball into an open net.

HT Godalming 1-0 Ash Utd

15 minutes into the second half saw a cracking move from the visitors down their right and the ball crisply played into the edge of the 6-yard box where it was blasted past the G’s keeper for their second goal.

Their third came from a long ball in from their left that somehow the G’s could not clear. It was not that the G’s did not contest the game, in fact they had far more of the possession, as the stats show, but simply could not make it count. Ash however were able to break from defence quickly, in numbers and more decisively.

They rubbed salt into the wound with their fourth, which was a fine strike from 30 yards or so from out on the right, which crept in the top far corner.

Joe Sowden again probably the pick of the G’s players although Jeff and Coxey both ran him close.
