A Godalming side depleted by injuries and suspensions lost 2-0 to Aylesbury on Saturday. The Gs, without captain Graeme Purdy, Louis Hutton, Darren Wheeler and Liam Roberts gave starts to new signings Daniel Bassett and Halluna Masembe.
On a difficult playing surface, it was the home side who had the first chances, Gareth Price had an effort blocked by Tom Willment before Richard Ossai saved an awkward strike from Aston Goss. New boys Masembe and Bassett both had half chances for the Gs, but failed to truly test the home keeper. Richard Ossai was then called into action as he acrobatically tipped over a looping effort from James Dobson. In first half stoppage time Aylesbury’s Gareth Price was bundled over in the penalty area, with the referee pointing to the spot. Ryan O’Toole stepped up to convert the spot kick into the bottom corner.
Aylesbury double their lead 8 minutes into the second half, when a nice exchange between Kieron Schmidt and Aston Goss allowed the latter to break through on goal and finish well past Ossai into the corner. Bassett and Willment both had chances for the Gs as the game drew on, but in truth the home side saw out the victory with relative ease. James Dobson nearly added a third in the dying seconds but his shot whistled past the post.
