In an entertaining match that could have gone either way, Godalming eventually lost out 4-3 to Barton Rovers. A bright start to the match saw Will Hutton and Piers Oldland both go close with long range efforts for Godalming. However after 13 minutes it was the home side who took the lead, a hanging cross from the left found Nat Peacock at the far post, who headed home from a few yards. The impressive Keshi Anderson doubled Barton’s lead ten minutes later, after an initial shot was blocked, Anderson fired the rebound high into the net. Graeme Purdy had a shot well blocked at the other end, and on 33 minutes Godalming halved the deficit, a looping volley from Jack Mazzone flew over the Barton keeper and into the net. On the stroke of half time Barton restored their two goal lead, Ricky Young being allowed to turn on the edge of the area, and firing past Richard Ossai into the bottom corner.
Piers Oldand made it 3-2 on 53 minutes, finding a pocket of space in the penalty area to loop a head over the stranded goalkeeper. Seven minutes later and the Gs were on level term, again Piers Oldland was involved, this time squaring the ball for Jack Mazzone to hammer home from 12 yards. The equality only lasted a minute however, as Barton immediately restored their lead, capitalising on some poor defending, with Ricky Young scoring his second and Barton’s fourth. Godalming’s best chance to grab another equaliser came with ten minutes left, but Piers Oldland’s effort was blocked on the line after he’d tried to turn the ball in after a long throw.
Godalming now travel to Aylesbury United on Saturday, before hosting AFC Hayes on Tuesday 19th.
