Bedford 6th Feb
The G’s today return from Bedford with an emphatic victory, all three points and a clean sheet, but may well have to face the cost of losing Steve Laidler to a knee injury midway through the first half and his impressive young replacement Rory Sellick halfway through the second half with an even more worrying injury having been stretchered off the pitch.
The threatened heavy down pours before the match never did materialise and the pitch was in pretty good shape despite being a bit bobbly. The wind however was almost as bad as it was a Thame when the G’s met Aylesbury United there earlier in the season. Not the best conditions for flowing football.
It will have cheared the travelling G’s fans however to see Richard Ossai helping the G’s regular keeper Oneal Garnes warming up before the game. He featured on the bench alongside Danny Bassett, Rory Sellick and newcomer Pasha Tayo-Walker.
The G’s lined up without Graeme Purdy (unavailable) so Joao Andrade played at No 9 while in the absence of suspended Will Hutton, Liam Roberts played out wide on the right.
Chris Musgrove returned to partner Tom Willment with Charlie Hutton at right back and Nick Hutchings at left back. This allowed Ashley Lloyd to go back to playing in front of the back four, while the successful central midfield pairing of Louis Hutton (c) and Steve Laidler started with Darren Wheeler as usual out on the left.
Godalming started the match playing into the extremely strong wind, which made anything played long in the air, or on the ground for that matter something of a lottery. In the opening exchanges Bedford where more dominant but, as the half progressed, the G’s got more into it and produced some good moves under the circumstances.
On 19 minutes the G’s won the first corner the game. On 22 minutes a good run from Steve Laidler, driving out of defence, ended with with Andrade on the right of the goal, but the striker unfortunately couldn’t get his shot on target.
A good run by Charlie Hutton on 28 minutes broke through the Bedford defence without getting a good finish.
Steve Laidler was taken off after 37 minutes having injured his left knee stretching for a tackle at full pelt in the midfield. This was one of 4 -5 injuries that required treatment on the pitch in the first half.
The change allowed Rory Sellick to come on and play wide on the right hand side whilst Liam Roberts dropped into midfield alongside Louis Hutton in the boiler room.
Half time 0-0.
The opening moments of the second half saw Joao Andrade go close and then battle to get between the Bedford keeper and his defenders and was able to poke the ball in from close range during a moment of Bedford indecision. G’s 1 up.
Moments later Louis Hutton played a free kick from inside the G’s half to Darren Wheeler deep in the left corner from where he delivered the ball into the danger area and Rory Sellich speeding in from the right was able to pick it up turn and shoot past the Bedford keeper. G’s now 2 up.
Another fine move down the left saw Nick Hutchings feature, leaping to avoid a couple of tackles and the resulting cross saw Andrade head just past the near post. By this time the G’s were looking pretty dominant.
26 minutes into the second half after a substantial build-up by the G’s in the Bedford half Ashley Lloyd hit a ferocious shot from well outside the area, which went in just under the crossbar. 3 – 0 to Godalming.
Danny Bassett came on for Joao Andrade and looked lively chasing down the Bedford defenders at every chance.
Rory Sellick also had to leave the field injured after receiving a strong challenge that brought a yellow card for the Bedford player, one of three in all that the referee dispensed to the Bedford team, with none to the G’s.
This brought Pasha Tayo-Walker on for his first appearance for the G’s. He showed his confidence and skill on the ball, but his slight frame appeared a mismatch against some of the defenders.
All round a very pleasing result for the squad who probably felt a bit hard done by after the result on Tuesday. Oneal had a pretty quiet game as Bedford were unable to come up with anything much once they got into the final third.
Hopefully Rory has not suffered too serious an injury and will be back playing in the team soon.
