CB Hounslow 3 – 0 Godalming Town
Hounslow will not have a luckier game this season. The score line might suggest that the G’s were outplayed, but that was not the case.
The hosts had an inspired performance from their keeper and the woodwork to thank for their three points today.
The G’s started with Aaron Bufton in goal, Callum Rootes left back, Steve Betancourt centre back and captain and Kieron Wright at right back. Tre Trowers starting in front of the back three. Darren Wheeler wide on the left, Ben Cotton, and Luke Elgar as the midfield and Hakim Griffiths, Romario Hart at no 9 and Shawn Lyle upfront. On the bench were Mert Varli, Eugene Bongo and Joe Smith.
After a series of attacks down the G’s right they soon reverted to 4 4 2 with Luke dropping to right back and Hakim dropping deeper on the right. In the opening minutes, the G’s seemed to be quite threatening and Luke Elgar had a shot which was saved by the home keeper.
The first half saw the home side create more chances, but the possession was pretty equal. Then the deadlock was broken by a mistake from the normally solid Aaron Bufton who delivered a short pass straight to an opposition forward, who had the easiest opportunity to open the scoring. Shortly after this there was a great exchange of passes, which saw Luke Elgar go right down the right-hand side and into the home penalty area. However, his powerful shot hit the nearside post.
Then, having seen an unusual error from the G’s keeper (who has been outstanding in earlier games), we could not believe that he misplaced another kick, which again fell to the opposition and although the defence scrambled the ball off the line initially the ball popped up and was headed into the net from under the bar.
The G’s never gave up and Hakim, Shawn and Romario all looked dangerous in their approach play linking passes with the likes of Ben and Darren, but could not fashion the final ball to get their shots in. Aaron did redeem himself with a fine save towards the end of the first half. We have seen what a fine keeper he is, but today will be one he will choose to forget.
G’s won a free kick on their right just beyond the penalty area, Wheeler Country. He hit a fine dipping curling shot, which somehow the big home keeper got down to and just tipped around the post to the relief of his team.
HT G’s 2-0 down at half time.
The G’s started the second half well and never looked back. Tre Trower delivered a great shot, which rattled the upright and yet somehow the ball dropped straight to the keeper who was prostrate on the ground. Yet another piece of unbelievable luck.
The G’s were now dominating possession to the obvious dislike of the home team’s manager who was reduced to shouting, “Get the f****** ball, you know the round thing – and hold it”.
Eugene Bongo came on for Shawn Lyle and Mert Varli for Tre Trowers as the G’s went for all out attack. Despite their efforts the Gods of Football conspired to deny them any luck whatsoever in this encounter. Hakim broke through the middle and delivered a fantastic drive, which again hit the crossbar possibly the result of the home keeper getting his fingers to it. Ben Cotton and several others hit shots that went just clear of the bar.
You will see from Michael’s stats that the G’s really dominated the second half, but, to add insult to injury in the dying minutes of the game, against the run of play the home side broke quickly down their right and got a one on one opportunity with Aaron, which just crept in at the far post. Probably only their second meaningful attack of that half.
So again, a disappointing result, but much that the G’s can look at as positive. The front players all looked lively and in midfield and defence there were many good performances. On another day they would have walked away as 3-0 winners. A funny old game.

Michael’s additional tasting note: yet another CC ground without Bovril on sale! Hounslow gain points for their great bar/changing facility but are docked 2 Michel stars from their rating – one for not selling Bovril and the second because upon being asked for some non-available Bovril the lovely girl at the hatch replied “What’s Bovril?”
