Godalming Town FC

Chatham 0 Godalming 1

We are on a role! Two wins in a row, six points and two clean sheets. Cannot ask for more than that. What an achievement by Dan and his team off the pitch to guide the boys on the pitch back to winning ways.

Gs were without Callum Eagle still recovering from injury and Sean Mason who was unavailable due to a family wedding, but Graeme Purdy was back from injury and leading the attack again alongside Manny Quarshue.  So the versatile Piers Oldland dropped back to right back alongside Chris Wales, Chris Musgrove and Carl Garstang at the back while Oneal Garnes was in goal. In the midfield were William Efambe, Matt Bunyan, Steve Brown and Darren Wheeler. On the bench were Joseph Strocchetti, Rory Sellick, Nick Sowden and Tom Webb.

It was a pretty dominant performance on the pitch when from the kick off the Gs attacked and Manny Quashie went close before the sound of the refs whistle had died away.

A string of Gs corners followed with the hosts defending strongly and receiving yellow cards early on. Matt Bunyan saw his header pushed wide by the home keeper Louis Lawlor as it seemed to be heading in.

Then on thirty minutes in the home number 3 Abdul Lyoubi received his second yellow for a tackle on Darren Wheeler and his marching orders from the ref. Chris Wales amongst others had chances from corners that went wide.

Then shortly before the break the rejuvenated Purdy latched on to a ball from Wheeler on the right outside the area and had an opportunity to lob the home keeper, which he did, but the home stopper was able to scramble back and save.

Both the home number 9 and 10 ended in the referees book including a loud vocal exchange with the referee about tying his laces. So the Gs went in at half time having dominated the hosts and one man up knowing that their keeper had had little to do other than to deal with some high corners.

The second half was similar to the first with the visitors having most of the possession, but could not convert their chances to goals. The ref did seem to be rather keen to dispense yellow cards. Chatham did get a free kick outside the area, which was hammered well wide.

At the other end when the Gs were awarded a free kick midway between the half way line and goal area which Darren took quickly and almost caught the home keeper out of place but it just cleared the bar.

It was after this that the Chatham side created their first shot from open play.

Then Graeme Purdey showed a clean pair of heals to the home defence as he latched on to a ball through the middle from Manny and slipped the ball past the home keeper to put the Gs one up.

William Efambe showed his pace and had a couple of chances to attack the home defence. On one occasion the keeper was booked for infringing William outside of the penalty area.  Shortly after William himself was booked.

Nick Sowden came on in place of William to add his energy in the midfield.

Matt Bunyan was able to get on the end of a through ball and battled his way past a couple of defenders, but the onrushing home keeper was able to deflect the shot wide.

Chris Wales was then booked for a foul although he had appeared to be the recipient of an elbow to the face.

Rory Sellick came on Manny and after a few minutes he was able to pick up the ball in midfield and ran forward cleverly making a one two on the way and then selflessly tried the same trick with Graeme Purdy who simply had run out of gas and was about to be replaced. So this chance petered out

So the Gs had plenty of chances to go further ahead, but were unable to capitalise.

Michael’s stats tell a story too. Where as against Lewes we concentrated on defending for much of the game. Against Chatham we attacked them and that forced them back, preventing them getting any meaningful shots in at all. It was a quiet day for Oneal although of course he had to deal with a number of high balls, which he did really well.

Gs MoM could be Matt Bunyan again but it was another great performance all round.
