An enthralling match saw Godalming come within seconds of taking all three points from title chasing Cirencester Town. The opening stages of the match were scrappy, with neither side managing to take control of proceedings. Graeme Purdy was proving a handful for the Cirencester defence, whilst at the other end Lee Smith was Cirencester’s main attacking threat down the left flank. There was an unusual incident in the 15th minute, when the home goalkeeper, after consulting with the referee, disappeared back to the changing room for five minutes, leaving the game stopped for that length. The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute, when a throw in was flicked on by Purdy, with Jack Mazzone controlling the ball and then turning and firing left footed past the keeper to give Godalming the lead. Zaki Oualah was called into action at the other end, saving well from Lee Smith before saving again from the resulting corner. Godalming could have doubled their lead just before half time, but Chris Musgrove’s header from a free kick bounced narrowly wide.
It took four minutes of the second half before Godalming doubled their lead. This time a corner was flicked on by Purdy, with Jack Mazzone turning the ball in from two yards. From then on, Cirencester piled the pressure on the Godalming goal, with numerous saves, blocks and near misses. Godalming had the odd break out with Mark Watkins and Chris Wales both going close to latching on to through balls. The half drew on with Cirencester piling more and more players forward, and they finally found the breakthrough on 86 minutes, with Jody Bevan the scorer. A goalmouth fracas occurred minutes later after Oualah was caught late by a Cirencester forward. The referee showed a yellow a piece, and this incident is presumably why 7 minutes of injury time was played, in a half where neither physio came on the pitch. It was in the 96th minute when Cirencester equalised, with Lee Smith finding space on the left to finish past Oualah.
Godalming travel to Mangotsfield United this Saturday. There is a coach departing Wey Court at 10:45am. As usual, tickets are £12 for members and £15 for non-members.
