Missed chances proved costly as Godalming lost 1-0 at Clevedon Town on Saturday. After even opening exchanges, the first chance fell the way of Godalming, in the form of a penalty kick. Jack Mazzone was felled by Oli Barton, the Clevedon keeper, as he reached out for the ball. Sam De St Croix stepped up for the penalty, but his low effort was saved by Barton, who then claimed the rebound. Zaki Oualah was called into action on occasion by the Clevedon forwards, but other than that the Gs were fairly comfortable. Dan Seabrook came close to giving Godalming the lead, his long range lob saw Barton scramble back to tip the ball over the crossbar. Mark Watkins also went close for Godalming, his fierce effort bounce just outside the post. The home side took the lead on 42 minutes, when Reeko Best pounced on some hesitant defending to finish cooly past Oualah.
Oualah was called into action early in the second half, acrobatically tipping over a shot from Ibz Diallo. After that it became nearly one way traffic, with Godalming pushing for an equalising goal. Graeme Purdy fizzed a half volley wide of the post, whilst Sam De St Croix rolled a shot narrowly wide. Soon after Jack Mazzone squared the ball for Purdy, whose sliding effort was blocked by the keeper. The rebound found it’s way back to Watkins, who blazed over from ten yards. Watkins was involved again, firing a ball across the face of goal, which unfortunately had to much power on it for the onrushing Gs to reach. Jack Broome fired a free kick over late on, whilst Clevedon nearly doubled their lead at the other end, but Jack MacFarlane unconventionally scrambled the ball off the goal line.
Tuesday’s match at Tiverton has been postponed, due to Tiverton playing an FA Trophy Replay on that night. The Gs are next in action on Saturday 23rd November, when we host Mangotsfield United.
