Godalming 2-3 East Grinstead Town

A young East Grinstead Town team would have felt lucky to walk away from Wey Court with all three points as the G’s put up a stern effort but just couldn’t find that equaliser.

The Gs had Oneal Garnes in goal, Chris Wales at right back, Chris Musgrove returned to partner Graeme Purdy as the centre-back pairing and Nick Hutchings at left back. Player coach Chris Atkins made up centre defence with new signing from Leatherhead, Kyle Bailey. Matt Males was the defensive midfielder in front of the back four. With new signing from Farnborough Jack Battie and captain Darren Wheeler behind Jack Mazzone at Number9 with Josh Andrew and Hircham Abdellah in the wide positions. Ryan Zidyana, Ashley Quashie, Graeme Purdy and Chris Musgrove were on the bench.

It was East Grinstead that started brightly and showed some good play with their passes and Oneal Garnes was forced in to an early save with a fine shot from Laste Dombaxe after 8 minutes. Godalming had to make an early substitution as Chris Atkins picked up a hamstring injury and was immediately replaced by Graeme Purdy.

It was East Grinstead that scored first. A cross from the left was met by Will Thomas who’s shot was saved by Garnes but it was debutant Michael Salako who scored from the rebound at close range after good work by Salako. G’s 0-1 Grinstead.

The Gees did not let this knock them off their stride however and continued to play some good passing moves. On 19 minutes a cross in from Hitcham Abdellah was met by Graeme Purdy who had his shot cleared off the line and Grinstead managed to clear the ball.

On 26 minutes, new signing Jack Battie had his first shot on goal however he put it wide of goal after some good work from Abdellah again. A few minutes later, Darren Wheeler picked out Abdellah out on the right, Abdellah took the ball well, turned and shot at Chris Haigh in the Grinstead goal who held the ball well.

Half Time 0-1

The second half continued rather as the first with East Grinstead putting pressure on the G’s defence. On 53 minutes, Noel Mbo’s pass was picked up Laste Dombaxe who shot couldn’t be stopped by Garnes. G’s 0-2 Grinstead.

On 59 minutes a run by Darren Wheeler down the left, put in a cross which was met by Chris Wales who slotted the ball into the back of the net to pull one back for the Godalming 1-2.

East Grinstead then regained a two goal advantage. On 69 minutes, a corner swung in from the right, was met by Noel Mbo who’s shot hit the post initially but then shot again from close range after the G’s defence failed to clear the ball.

Godalming made the second substitution, young Ryan Zidyana came on and replaced Jack Battie who had a fairly quiet game on his debut but the substitution was the right one as Zidyana scored within minutes from coming on. Miscommunication between Haign and his defence with Mazzone pressurisg the defence allowed Zidyana to pick up the loose ball and slot the ball into the net 2-3.

With time running out the home team were pressing harder and got a free kick with a few miuntes to go but this was cleared by East Grinstead. With a spell of late corners of which Oneal Garnes came up to see if he could help score but the Grinstead defence were strong enough to clear the ball away and secure their 6th win of the season.
