A superb performance from Godalming saw them dispatch Eastbourne Town 3-0 at the Saffrons on Tuesday. Godalming flew out of the blocks, with Warren Harris troubing the Eastbourne defence with his pace and trickery. Dan Read came close to giving the Gs the lead, but scuffed his effort from ten yards after a Wheeler cross. Godalming did take the lead soon after, when another Darren Wheeler cross was met by the foot of Warren Harris who prodded the ball into the corner of the net. Five minutes later the Gs doubled their lead. A slick passing move culminated in Brett Cooper setting up Dan Read, who made no mistake with the finish. Godalming’s pace and tempo mean that Eastbourne hardly had a sniff in the first half.
Eastbourne made a sub at half time, which seemed to rejuvenate them as they penned Godalming into their half for the first ten minutes. Their closest effort came from a header from a corner, which rattled the crossbar, then bounced on the line and out. Despite the early pressure, the Gs started to take control again, and it should have been 3-0 when Dan Read was inches away from heading home a Wheeler cross. It was Darren Wheeler who settled proceedings, when he fired into the top corner from 12 yards out in the 86th minute. Eastbourne were reduced to ten men in the closing stages, when Kai Bichard received a straight red card for an off the ball incident.
Godalming XI: Somerville, D.Smith, Lake, Hollis, Simeone, Cooper, McClurg, W.Harris, Wheeler, Read, S.Harris (Palmer). Unused subs: Short, Baker, Harrison.
