Godalming 1 – 1 Farnham Town
If you look at the relative positions of the teams with the visitors at third place and the Gs nearer the bottom at 15th you have to accept that a draw was a reasonable result for the home side going in to the game.
However, I cannot hlp feeling that this was an opportunity for three points that we have missed.
The first half saw a fairly frantic game with the home side, for me, dominating possession, but missing a few opportunities when they arose.
The home side started well with Jordan Bird making a good run down the left and he delivered a good ball back into the box where Jack Cleevley was on hand to hit a powerful shot. Unfortunately, it went wide from a good position. Farnham then went close when from a free kick they headed over.
After more Gs pressure they finally got on the scoreboard when, after several chances in the 6 yard box fell to other players, Chris Burke finally poked the ball over the line. Gs 1 – 0 up.
Just before the break however the Gs, who had seemed to be quite in control, conceded a free kick a few metres outside the penalty area at the training pitch end. All credit to the taker who hit an absolute peach of a shot over the wall and just under the bar. So the Gs did not go in to half time in front.
HT Godalming 1-1 Farnham Town
Farnham seemed to put more player forward in the second half and at one stage things seemed to get a bit combative and a number of cards were waved. The biggest threat from the visitors for me revolved around ex G Nick Medcraft.
For the Gs they also had a couple of good chances themselves that fell to Jack Cleevley, but again he could not put them away.
Darren Wheeler got a good effort in that was cleared off the line. He also managed to deliver a number of sweet looking crosses from the left with great class but the Gs had no one to profit from and convert them. Oliver Steven did get his head to one, which came back off the post. He had a good debut for the home side.
From a fairly innocuous attack Curtis was adjudged to have fouled a Farnham player as the last defender and for that was given a straight red card, which seemed a bit harsh, but he did say afterwards that there was contact, so I guess we cannot argue.
This seemed to further unsettle the Gs who, now down to ten men, were getting a fit of the jitters. However, they held out despite some close calls and a great bit of defending from Ashley who has been so influential. Nick Medcraft did not endear himself to his former team and was booked for a blatant dive.
So, the Gs hung on in the end to the relief of the home fans.
