One mistake would cost Godalming Town in the heat at Wey Court as a second-half Evandro Delgado snatched all 3 points for Potters Par Town as the Gs fell to their first defeat of the 2015-16 season.
With pitch-side temperatures reaching 30 degrees the game was a sluggish affair, with the Gs struggling to truly penetrate the well organised visitors, who pounced when Delgado capitalised on a Lee Rushe slip to fire past Richard Ossai in the 62nd minute.
With George Frith unavailable Jack Mazzone started for the first time this season and he shot wide in the 12th minute, shortly after Adam Cornell fired straight at Mike Underwood. With the sun beaming down the tempo of the game remained slow, and Cornell’s glancing header from a Darren Wheeler cross was the best chance of the half, his effort fizzing wide of the far post.
Louis Hutton, playing deeper in Frith’s absence, shot wide in the 59th minute before the visitors got the elusive goal with their first shot on target. Rushe, in an attempt to bring the ball under his control, stood on it and Delgado was quick to take advantage, finishing into the far corner for his second goal of the season.
In a game of limited opportunities an immediate leveller would have seemed unlikely but the Gs nearly managed it, Wheeler’s cross fumbled by Underwood onto the post. At the other end Ossai made a smart save from Chris Doyle, tipping the full back’s volley over the bar.
Wheeler bent a free kick over before Ossai denied Charlie Nelson at the other end but it was the hosts who tried to force the game in the heat, and substitutes Liam Roberts and Graeme Purdy both had chances to score a late equaliser but on both occasions the target was missed.
Andy Hunt’s men are in FA Cup action at Marlow on Saturday, before travelling to Fleet Town in a Bank Holiday derby on the Monday. However, should the cup tie at Marlow be level at full time then the Gs will host the Blues on the Tuesday night.
