Godalming returned to action at Wey Court after a 59 day absence, and finished with all three points after a tough encounter with Bishops Cleeve.
The game kicked off 15 minutes late, allowing for a couple of Bishops Cleeve players who had been caught in traffic. In wet and windy conditions, it was the visitors who started on the front foot, forcing the Godalming defence into action when Nick Hutchings cleared an effort off the line. Godalming were failing to maintain any pressure in the Bishops Cleeve half, and were nearly caught out when Cheltenham loanee Harry Williams danced through the Godalming midfield, only to fall theatrically as he made his way into the penalty area. Despite the early pressure from Bishops Cleeve, it was Godalming who took the lead on 25 minutes. Jack Broome fired a low free kick which the goalkeeper spilled, and prolific centre-back Chris Musgrove was on hand to tap in the rebound for his 7th goal of the season. The goal sparked an improvement in the Gs performance, with a nice move involving Dan Read and Graeme Purdy nearly paying off but for the Cleeve keepers’ smart reactions.
The second half saw Godalming pressure the visitor’s goal more often than in the first, with Graeme Purdy first forcing the keeper into a save, before hitting the top of the crossbar with an unorthodox overhead kick. At the other end a long goal kick caught the wind, nearly catching Zaki Oualah out, but the Gs keeper scrambled onto the ball to save embarrassment. Purdy had the ball in the net soon after, but was given offside as he tapped in at the far post. Bishops Cleeve made one final push in search of an equaliser, but a good save from Oualah followed by a block from Jack Broome ensured Godalming kept hold of all three points.
