Godalming returned to top spot after a hard fought 1-0 win over a strong Daventry Town side.
A crowd of over 200 witnessed a tight first half, in which neither team managed to carve out a real opening. Scott Cross snatched a half chance wide early on for the visitors, whilst Darren Wheeler was at his tricky best for Godalming, with Dan Read nearly converting a low cross.
The second half continued in much the same vein, and as the half drew on it seemed more likely that one goal would settle affairs. That goal came in the 79th minute when Scott Harris played a ball through to Johnnie Dyer, who lobbed the ball over Daventry keeper Richard Harris and under the crossbar. The final 10 minutes seemed to last an age, with the Gs recent tendency of conceding late goals playing on everyone’s minds. However Godalming held out, and returned to first place ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Leighton.
Godalming XI: Somerville, Broome, Hollis, Foulser, Lake, Edwards, McClurg, Short (Cooper), Wheeler, Read (S.Harris), Dyer. Subs not used: Palladino, Palmer, W.Harris.
