Godalming got their season off to a winning start, courtesy of a first half header from Jack Mazzone. An even start to the game saw Piers Oldland shoot narrowly wide after cutting inside from the left, whilst at the other Kurtney Brooks curled a left footed free kick onto the post, whilst the follow up header went straight into keeper Richard Ossai’s hands. Despite Marlow getting on top as the half grew on, it was Godalming found the breakthrough in the 40th minute, when a pin-point cross from Steve Brown was met by the head of Jack Mazzone, who headed past Simon Grant from 8 yards. Richard Ossai had to race back to claw away a lob from Lee Barney just before half time, to ensure the Gs entered the break with a slim lead.
The second half continued to be a tight affair, with Will Hutton drawing a good stop from Grant after an ambitious long range effort. Further half chances fell to Piers Oldland and Will Hutton, whereas at the other end Marlow forced Ossai into a smart save low to his right. Further Marlow pressure was absorbed well by the Godalming defence, though Marlow did have a golden chance to equalise in the dying minutes, but Lee Barney fired over the crossbar.
Godalming travel to Barton Rovers on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm.
