Godalming Town won the Surrey Senior Cup for the second time in the clubs history, with a 1-0 win over Blue Square South side Sutton United at Gander Green Lane. The Gs came into the game on the back of Playoff defeat, whilst Sutton narrowly missed out on the Playoffs, despite winning the last 9 games of the season.
A bright start from Godalming saw Warren Harris find some space on the right and test Tom Lovelock early on. Ryan Lake also had a header saved for the Gs, who were more than a match for their higher league opponents in the opening stages. Sutton started to exert pressure as the half drew on, but failed to really test Jake Somerville. The teams entered the break at 0-0, after a half of few chances.
An even start to the second half saw Godalming go close, but Jamie McClurg’s volley flew harmlessly over the crossbar. Sutton’s best effort of the match came via a free-kick, which cleared the wall but clipped the outside of the post. Just as it looked like the games was heading for extra time, a poor clearance from Sam Rents saw keeper Tom Lovelock come out of his goal to the edge of the area to punch the ball, only to be beaten to it by the head of Scott Harris. Harris’ header bounced towards the goal, and despite the efforts of two Sutton defenders chasing back, the ball ended up in the back of the net. The Gs held on for a final few nervy minutes, and the final whistle was greeted by scenes of jubilation by all from Godalming.
