Godalming Town’s difficult start to the season continued as they lost a fourth consecutive league game, with a Jack Keating header plundering all three points for Barton Rovers.
The Gs had lead through Jack Mazzone but half time was soon followed by an Aston Grant equaliser, before the impressive Keating struck, confirming a fourth home defeat of the campaign for the hosts.
Godalming enjoyed a strong opening 45 minutes and Tom Willment headed over early on before a Darren Wheeler cross struck Graeme Purdy inside the 6 yard box, with Kyle Forster fortunate the striker didn’t have time to direct the ball as it nestled into his gloves.
Louis Hutton then shot over before the Gs took the lead just after the half hour mark. Mazzone’s ball from the left started life as a cross before inadvertently flying beyond Forster and into the top corner, his 4th goal in the space of 5 days.
The visitors responded quickly and Richard Ossai was at his acrobatic best to deny Lucas Perry a swift equaliser, before Elliot Bailey fizzed an effort off target. However, the Gs ended the half on top and Purdy chested wide before Wheeler tested Forster in first half stoppage time.
Godalming appeared to change formation at the break and Barton equalised 10 minutes after the restart, Ossai not getting enough on Tom Peverall’s cross allowing Grant the opportunity to pounce, and he side-footed home his first goal for the Rovers.
Mazzone, looking lively and having a shot deflected wide, was replaced by Adam Cornell as the hosts searched for a winner, and with the game in the balance it seemed the 3 points could go either way. The decisive goal came with 10 minutes remaining, Kev Kilroy’s pin-point free kick being met by full back Keating who nodded home, capping a solid performance.
Lee Rushe volleyed over as the hosts looked for a late leveller but it wasn’t to be as they slipped meekly below their guests in the table. The Gs play current table toppers Royston Town at Wey Court on Saturday before travelling to Chalfont St Peter the following Tuesday.
