A disappointing night saw Godalming slip to a 2-1 defeat against Slough Town, and with leaders Burnham losing to Rugby, the Gs had a great chance to put the race for the title in their own hands.
A bright start from Godalming saw Jamie McClurg fire over, and Scott Harris forced a smart save from Jamie Jackson. The visitors took the lead after 36 minutes, when Kyle Anthony’s initial effort was saved by Somerville, but Anthony finished at the second attempt. Jake Somerville made a good save from Slough captain David Woozley, tipping his header onto the bar and over just before half time. The visitors doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when Ed Smith lobbed to ball over the oncoming Somerville. Godalming struck back minutes later, when Dan Read got a touch on a Warren Harris strike, deflecting it past Jackson. Somerville then made a fine save from a Dave Deeney freekick, before Godalming piled on the pressure for the remaining minutes. Dan Read had a goal disallowed for Godalming, tucking home after Jackson had saved, but Read was deemed to have been offside when the ball was struck.
Godalming now sit in 3rd place, 2 points behind Rugby, and 5 behind Burnham although with a game in hand. Godalming host Northwood this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
