Thatcham Town ran out 2-1 winners against Godalming on Saturday, a disappointing result for the Gs on the back of some good performances against higher ranked sides. The visitors started brightly, having the majority of play without troubling the Godalming goal too much. Jack Mazzone had Godalming’s first chance, but was foiled by the onrushing Aaron Bufton. Chris Wales also had a good chances for the Gs, but scuffed his effort from the edge of the area meekly wide. Thatcham took the lead on 37 minutes, a free kick into the Godalming box was parried by Zaki Oualah, leaving Luke Abrahart the simple task of tapping home.
Godalming responded well after the break, with Jack Mazzone turning the ball home after Dan Read had cut the ball back on the right. Godalming were now in the ascendancy, with Darren Wheeler tormenting the Thatcham back four. It was Wheeler who set up a golden chance for Dan Read to put the Gs ahead, but his finish was saved by Bufton. A free kick against the run of play was awarded to Thatcham, which right back Jake Johns curled excellently into the corner. Soon after Godalming had a strong penalty appeal turned down when Bufton appeared to push Graeme Purdy over in the penalty area. Thatcham survived a late onslaught from Godalming to claim an important three points.
