An entertaining match that survived the weather produced a 2-2 draw, with all the goals coming in the first half. The game was played at Guildford City’s Spectrum ground, due to Godalming’s ground suffering from flood damage.
The opening periods were uneventful, with both sides adjusting to the boggy surface. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when the visitors took the lead after a free kick flicked off the top of Gs captain Gavin Millers head and looped inside the far post. Godalming bounced back immediately however, when substitute Dan Read headed in a George Bowerman cross with his first touch since coming on as a sub for the injured Mark Watkins. Read then gave the Gs the lead moments later after racing through after a flick on from Graeme Purdy, and he cooly nudged the ball past Adam McHugh. Seconds before the half time whistle Elliot Osborne-Ricketts side footed the visitors level to make it 2-2 at the break.
North Leigh piled on the pressure in the second half, but Godalming defended resolutely. North Leigh came closest when a header hit the top of the bar, but they struggled to break through the deep lying Godalming defence. Despite North Leigh dominating the possession, Godalming could have wrapped up the points late on when firstly Jack Mazzone had an effort well saved, before Dan Read then also had a shot saved by Forest Green loanee McHugh.
Godalming return to the Spectrum this Wednesday when we are in derby action against Guildford City.
