An enthralling match at Wey Court saw an ultimately fair result as Godalming drew 2-2 with Rugby.

Sam Belcher fired Rugby into the lead 18 minutes in, a low strike that swerved into the bottom corner. The goal was followed by a period of Rugby pressure, with Godalming failing to carve out any clear chances. However Johnnie Dyer headed Godalming level on 38 minutes against the run of play, after a looping cross from Ryan Lake. A mazy Darren Wheeler run ended up with the ball being crossed to the far post to Scott Harris, who headed back across the goal and Jamie McClurg bravely headed Godalming into the lead three minutes into first half stoppage time.

After a slightly less open start to the second half, Darren Wheeler had a golden chance to extend Godalming’s lead, but after rounding the keeper he fired into the side netting. Rugby equalised on 68 minutes after Alex Gudge headed in from a corner, which set up an open end to the game, with both sides looking for the winner. The game finished 2-2, ending Rugby’s 9 game winning streak, and keeping Godalming at the top of the table.

Godalming XI: Somerville, Broome, Hollis, Foulser, Lake, Edwards (Short), McClurg, W.Harris, Wheeler, Dyer (Read), S.Harris.

Subs not used: Cooper, Simeone, Palmer.
