In a rematch of last seasons epic Playoff Semi Final, the Gs again scored four, but this time Bognor only managed two. Before the game Darren Wheeler was presented with his Ryman South team of the year award, and he certainly lived up to that tag in this match.
Bognor’s backup keeper Tom Boyle was in goal for Godalming, with Gs keeper Jake Somerville still recovering from a knee injury. Bognor struck Boyle’s crossbar after an effort from Kempson, and then the post with an effort from Terry Dodd, with Ashley Robinson heading over from the rebound. Dan Read came closest for Godalming in the first half, but his effort from a tight angle went narrowly wide.
Warren Harris gave Godalming the lead in the 61st minute, when he smashed the ball past Stoner from 10 yards. Dan Read made it two soon after, when Johnnie Dyer’s header rebounded off the post, leaving Read with a simple tap in. Darren Wheeler curled the ball into the top corner from outside the area to make it 3-0, but an error by Tom Boyle mean Ben Chick pulled one back for Bognor. Ashley Robinson curled in a low free kick to make it 3-2 with 7 minutes left, but Wheeler scored the pick of the bunch to make it 4-2 in the 86th minute. After picking the ball up on the left hand side, Wheeler weaved his way past 3 Bognor defenders, before slotting past Stoner.
Next up for Godalming are Ryman Premier side Kingstonian at Wey Court next Tuesday. Kick off 7.45pm.
