A Dan Read hat-trick secured three points for Godalming in a thrillling 4-3 win over Shortwood United. Despite the visitors long journey, they flew out of the blocks, taking the lead after only four minutes when Kevin Slack turned home after Zaki Oualah had tipped the ball onto the crossbar. Shortwood didn’t let up, and they doubled their lead four minutes later, this time John Cant fired a volley low into the corner from 18 yards. The second goal saw an immediate response from Godalming, Jack Broome’s free kick came back off the foot of the post, and fell into the path on Dan Read, who slotted home from a few yards out. Soon after Godalming were level, when Dan Seabrook fired home from Graeme Purdy’s cushioned header. The game continued at a frantic pace, with Shortwood coming back into the game as the half drew on, pressuring the Gs defence with a number of corners.
The curse of the early goal struck again four minutes into the second half, when the ball sat up fortuitously for Duncan Culley, who made no mistake with his finish. Once again, the lead didn’t last long, nine minutes later Dan Read had Godalming level. After flicking the ball over Shortwood’s Mark Pritchett, Read then fired an unstoppable volley into the top corner from 20 yards, leaving Tom King absolutely no chance in the Shortwood goal. Read struck again in the 66th minute, which proved to be the winning goal. After breaking clear of the visitors defence, Read’s first effort was parried by King, but the ball came straight back to Read, whose sidefooted finish snuck inside the post. With the nature of the game it seemed certain that the scoring would not stop there. however Godalming managed to hold onto their lead, with Shortwood’s task being made harder after they were reduced to ten men following a kick out after they had been awarded a free kick.
