Godalming Town made easy work of a limited Burnham side to progress to the next round of the League Cup, with the Gs able to run riot against a poor defence at Wey Court.
Jack Mazzone was the main beneficiary, completing a predatory first-half hat-trick, with strike partner Graeme Purdy grabbing a brace and Will Hutton also on the score sheet.
The first goal came just 9 minutes in with Mazzone rounding Ben Hitchins to bag his first strike of the season, but the goal was contested by the visitors and referee Michael Taylor overruled his assistant before giving the finish the nod, with Burnham adamant the Gs striker was offside.
Mazzone’s second was a class finish, latching on to Purdy’s flick before elegantly lobbing over Hitchings, and he nearly completed a hat-trick before the half-hour mark with the desperate Burnham defence hacking his effort of the line. From the following corner it was 3 for the Gs though, Lee Rushe swinging the ball back in for Purdy to thunder a header home.
The talismanic striker then missed a couple of chances, including one that hit the post, but Mazzone got his hat trick just 38 minutes in as he took advantage of a static defence to link up with Purdy and fire home. Remarkably it was 5 before the break, Will Hutton calmly slotting past Hitchins for his second goal in as many games.
The visitors, struggling in the South and West having been relegated from the Southern Premier last season, were no doubt regretting fielding a weakened team as the second period wore on, Godalming extending their lead when Purdy did his best to match Mazzone’s earlier chipped goal with a confident finish in front of the Shed End.
The hosts could, and should, have had a hatful more but ultimately were happy to see the game out as attentions drifted to the serious business of the league, with Barton Rovers visiting Wey Court on Saturday.
