Three goals in the first 25 minutes effectively ended Godalming’s FA Trophy run. Veteran striker Steve Claridge put Borough ahead after only 7 minutes, when he tapped home after keeper Jamie Norris was down after a collision with a Gosport player. There was no controversy about Gosport’s second, however. Justin Bennett finished off a mazy run with a powerful finish leaving Norris no chance. Bennett then got Gosport’s third on 24 minutes, his shot going in off the post. Gav Smith came closest for Godalming, but was well denied by the Gosport keeper.
Town started to exert more pressure in the second half, but could find no real cutting edge. The referee seemed to miss the ball striking the hand of a Gosport defender in the area as he was defending a corner. Scott Harris had the best chance of the second half, but his one on one effort went narrowly wide. Gosport added their fourth in injury time, when Claridge set up Adam Wilde who neatly finished.
Godalming will look to improve when they travel to Maidstone United on Wednesday evening, kick off 7.45pm.
