Guildford City 0-0 Godalming Town

An eventful local derby between Guildford City and Godalming Town ended goalless, in a game that saw three red cards.

The boggy surface made for difficult playing conditions, yet the game started at a high tempo. Both sides created openings early on, but neither keeper was particularly troubled. 20 minutes into the half, Guildford were reduced to ten men. A poor kick from Guildford keeper Anthony Hall saw Graeme Purdy break through the Guildford defence, only to be pulled back by Guildford defender Jamie Thoroughgood 30 yards from goal. With Thoroughgood being the last man, referee Samuel Ogles produced a red card. The resulting free kick was fired over the crossbar by Jack Broome.  The first real chance came midway through the first half when the ball rebounded and sat perfectly for Purdy to strike from 12 yards, but his powerful effort was well kept out by Anthony Hall. Both keepers were called into action as the half ensued, but the game remained goalless at the half time break.

Minutes into the second half Godalming were awarded a penalty for a foul on the edge of the area. Graeme Purdy stepped up, bit his effort was saved well by Hall. Ten minutes later Hall was called into action again with a superb double save, however as he scrambled for the rebound he was met by a robust challenge from Purdy, which saw the referee send him off to make it ten against ten. Chris Musgrove hit the bar for Godalming, whilst Jack Mazzone also had a shot saved by Hall from close range. With ten minutes left, Guildford were reduced to nine men after Darren Stapleton’s late tackle on Gavin Miller saw him pick up his second yellow card. Godalming piled on the pressure for the remainder, but could not find a way past the inspire Anthony Hall.

Godalming are next in action this Saturday, when we travel to high-flying Cirencester.
