Guildford (H)

Godalming 0 – 2 Guildford
This match was played in unusual heat and kicked off at 11.30am on Bank Holiday Monday, which it seems was a bit early for some of the G’s players, who did not appear.

The squad on the day was Aaron Bufton in goal, Joe Smith, Kieran Wright, Steve Betancourt and Isy Nzelo at the back, Ben Cotton, Piers Oldland, Tre Trowers, in the midfield with Darren Wheeler, Danny Elgar and Shawn Lyle up front. Only man on the bench was Eugene Bongo.

The home side looked a bit off the pace at the start and within fifteen minutes a long- range drive from the visitors right rattled their crossbar. A few minutes later the first goal for the visitors was scored. It came from a run across the edge of the G’s area, which was un-challenged.

Aaron Bufton made a great stop after 20 minutes only to see that the linesman’s flag was up for offside. This was to be a busy day for the home keeper.

Guildford second came from a move out on their right which was played into the box and fell to a forward who found himself one on one with Bufton and put the ball past him.

If that was not bad enough the G’s defence conspired to give a poor back pass, which a visiting forward accepted gratefully, but the impressive Aaron Bufton managed to block the shot.

The home sides first meaningful attack came with a good exchange of passes between Ben Cotton, Darren Wheeler and Piers Oldland, which gave Darren the chance of a shot, which was well saved by the Guildford keeper at full stretch. This seemed to inspire the home team to up their game and they managed a few more attempts on goal.

The start of the second half saw both Danny Elgar and Shawn Lyle get shots in without hitting the target. Darren got a yellow card for a poor tackle.

A good move from Guildford saw another fine save from Aaron blocking a shot with his body. Shawn Lyle received a yellow card for what looked like a pretty innocent tackle.

Eugene Bongo came on for Tre Trowers, shortly after Ben Cotton had a shot saved. Cotton then went down minutes later and Guildford counter attacked and Steve Betancourt was yellow carded for a desperate tackle outside the box.

Aaron Bufton was absolutely inspired in goal on the day and pulled off all sorts of saves to keep the G’s in the game so if we could give him two MOTM awards we would, he was well worth it.

Minds now turn to the upcoming visit to Hereford in the FA cup.
