Hastings Utd

Hastings United 3-0 Godalming Town

Godalming made their first trip of the season to the East Sussex coast to play one of the league contenders Hastings United.

The G’s had Oneal Garnes in goal with Nick Hutchings, George Spiers, Chris Musgrove and Chris Wales returning to defence with captain Ashley Lloyd playing in front of the back four.

Luke Perkins, Rory Sellick and Darren Wheeler in midfield. Matt Anton and Jake Kempton played upfront.

Hastings started brightly from the outset and could have been one up after three minutes but the goal was ruled offside. Hastings Stephen Butcher and Samuel Cole were giving the G’s a bit of a headache down both wings putting in good crosses into the G’s penalty area but no one could find that finishing touch.

Godalming then got into the game, Luke Perkins made a good run down the left, ran across the Hastings defence but couldn’t find the space to shoot at goal. Godalming’s best chance of the half came on 36 minutes, Wheeler put in a free-kick that was flicked on by Chris Musgrove to George Spiers who’s shot just hit the side netting. A few minutes later, good play from Matt Anton, pulled the ball back to Perkins who shot just wide.

Half Time: Hastings 0-0 Godalming

After being frustrated by the G’s good defending in the first half, Hastings started the second half exactly the same as the first half. They made two substitutions at half time bringing on Harry Stannard and Reece Butler who made an impact.

Godalming found themselves 1 down on 54 minutes, loanee Jay May heading in the goal after a shot saved from Oneal. 6 minutes later, Godalming were 2 down, this time substitute Stannard scoring into the bottom corner after a great pass from Sam Crutwell.

Andy Hunt then made two substitutions, Kassim Sandah replacing Wheeler and Toyosi Ademiju who joins the G’s from Merstham replacing Perkins. They got into the game quickly, both making runs into the Hastings box but just lacked that final touch. Matt Anton shot just wide of goal on 66 minutes but Godalming couldn’t find the goal on the day.

Hastings sealed the win on 88 minutes, a mistake from Chris Wales allowed Matt Bodkin to score from close range.
