Godalming Town Ladies 5-0 Haringey Borough
The GTFC Ladies marched into the first round proper of the SSE Ladies FA Cup on Sunday with a tremendous whole team performance that blew away their opposition although they are from the Premier League, a level above the G’ses.
From the first whistle, the G’ses were quicker to the loose ball and generally sharper all around the pitch. They created plenty of chances and the Gees looked like they were the team from the higher division.
After applying substantial pressure and having won a corner on the right the Gees went ahead from a close-range header from Toni West after a superb delivery from Megan Vincer
Only moments after this Becky Monro hit a powerful shot that crashed against the bar bounced down and out (memories of Frank Lampard), but the linesman did not award it.
Toni went on to grab 4 goals and Becky 1 in the first half from a match which they totally controlled.
Some of the approach play was memorable with Hannah Davies playing a great initial through ball for Ellen Thomas to run on to and deliver a tremendous low cross under pressure for Toni to score again.
Good first time passes and great covering when we were not in possession. Becky Bloor playing impressively in the centre of midfield and Steph Le with her tireless running in defence and support of the forwards.
Although the Gees did not add to the score in the second half, thanks in part to the performance of the visitor’s keeper, they were not really under any pressure either and Kim Ketchell had a pretty quiet game thanks to the organisation and the performance from the team in front of her.
Another great team performance from the ladies who should feel proud of this performance and have now won themselves a game against AFC Wimbledon Ladies in the next round on 12th November. They will have to do it all again and produce the same sort of performance to go through. No reason why they should not on this showing.
