Godalming Town Ladies 4–2 QPR Ladies Development
The GTFC Ladies delivered yet another blistering performance to win this League Cup encounter against a side who are top of the Premier League, (a level above the Gees) and what is more, have won all their 5 League games so far, this season. So, they should be very proud of this performance.
This was the strongest side that the Gees have faced at Wey Court this Season. QPR had a very skilful squad who passed the ball with confidence and put the home side under pressure for periods during the game. To their credit the Gees defended those situations well and went on to turn the tables.
The visitors started well and went two goals up before the Gees got on the scoreboard. In fact also before I got to the ground. They never did look like they would capitulate. But the outstanding Toni West got a goal back for the home side to keep them in touch
They worked so hard in every position on the pitch. The whole defence was superb and would not let their heads drop. Becky Bloor and Steph Le were outstanding in their energy and determination in the middle of the pitch while Becky Monroe and Toni West were always dangerous. In the end Toni got her second to square the score by latching on to a through ball, which she does so well.
So, the Gees fought their way back with such determination and belief to level the score at 2 all, only to see the visitors put the ball in the net again, only for it to be ruled offside. But it was a thrilling game to watch as the action was moving from one end of the pitch to the other. It was a credit to both sides to see the level of football being played.
Gees almost put their noses ahead just before half time when a great free kick from Lauren Carnell was delivered into the visitor’s penalty area and for once it was not Toni who met it but Ellen Thomas who hit a fine diving header with such power that on almost any other day would have hit the back of the net, but the visiting keeper brought off a great dive herself to save at full stretch.
HT Godalming Ladis 2-2 QPR Dev
The second half saw the visitors pile pressure on the Gees and the defence had to play their hearts out. Lauren Carnell was superb and calm under pressure, while Laura Funnell was called upon to use her strength and pace to clear up several times.
Laura also put in a great run down the left to get onto the end of a cross from Toni. Laura got a good left foot shot in but it curved away, clear of the goal.
QPR were unlucky in one attack, down their left and got a shot in that hit the far post and bounced straight back to Kim Ketchell, while she was flat out.
The Gees then started to come back themselves and put more pressure on their visitors winning a penalty, which was well hit home by Becky Bloor. Gees ahead now for the first time in the game. The next goal would be absolutely critical.
All game Toni West was managing to get her head to balls from Kim out of defence and again she got a deft flick onto a clearance to release Becky Monroe at pace behind the visitor’s defence. With great skill and calmness, she put the ball away to the delight of her all her teammates.
Now 4-2 up the Gees simply needed to remain strong and not lose focus. They did just that. Darren introduced some fine replacements to provide fresh legs. They showed the same commitment and energy to those that they replaced.
Another improvement in the GTFC Ladies performance, both in skill levels and sheer determination and effort.
Well done all of them, yet again, for another tremendous team performance.
