Two evenly matched sides produced a 1-1 draw in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
An uneventful first half produced very little goalmouth action. Marlow’s captain Tom Hicks was dominant in defence, whilst Gs keeper Richard Ossai confidently dealt with the home sides advances. Godalming did have a chance to steal a lead towards the end of the half, but Darren Wheeler couldn’t make a clean connection with Liam Roberts low cross.
Godalming made an early breakthrough in the second half, when Adam Cornell managed to push the ball past the committed Marlow keeper, allowing Will Hutton to square the loose ball to Darren Wheeler, who tapped into an empty net in the 50th minute.
Ten minutes later Marlow leveled, some neat play allowed Chris Ovenden to convert past Ossai. Godalming came close to taking the lead soon after, with Adam Cornell inches away from connecting with Will Hutton’s cross. Both sides had half chances as the game drew to a close, but they will now face each other again on Tuesday night to decide who progresses through to the 1st Qualifying Round.
Godalming XI: Ossai, C.Hutton, Rushe (Wales), Willment, Hutchings, L.Huton, Laidler, W.Hutton, Wheeler (Mazzone), Roberts, Cornell (Purdy).
