Godalming lost 2-1 to play off chasing Paulton Rovers, with two goals from Nick McCootie cancelling out George Bowerman’s early strike.
An even start to the match saw Godalming take the lead after only seven minutes, when George Bowerman’s cross from wide on the left looped over Paulton keeper Kyle Phillips and into the back of the net. Josh Jefferies came close to leveling soon after, but headed wide of the goal. Paulton had a big appeal for a penalty, but McCootie was adjudged to have fouled Gs keeper Zaki Oualah rather than the other way round. Paulton equalised on 37 minutes when McCootie converted a Mike Perrot cut back at the far post. Four minutes later and the hosts took the lead, when Gavin Miller pulled back Luke Ballinger in the penalty area. McCootie fired low into the left corner from the spot.
After surviving an initial spell of early pressure in the second half, Godalming started to control play and seek an equaliser. First Mark Watkins had Kyle Phillips scrambling as is cross looped towards the top corner, before beating away another Watkins effort from a tight angle. Chris Musgrove then had a golden chance to equalise, but his stretching effort from 6 yards was instinctively kept out by Phillips. Dan Cleverly came closest for Paulton soon after, his swerving volley striking the inside of the post.
Godalming travel to Didcot Town this Saturday, before making the trip to Shortwood United next Tuesday.
