Royston Town 0-1 Godalming Town – Sat 9th April. Attendance 176
Following Tuesday’s win against Aylesbury, the G’s travelled to Royston in the hope of keeping their playoff aspirations alive and came away with another impressive 1-0 win against a Royston side who I thought were one of the best footballing sides we’ve played this season.
Andy Hunt changed the set up to 4-5-1
Oneal Garnes was in goal with Charlie Hutton at right back, G’s Captain Graeme Purdy and Chris Musgrove the centre backs and Liam Roberts at left back, with Ashley Lloyd playing infront of the back four.
Will Hutton, Louis Hutton, Steve Laidler, Darren Wheeler made up the midfield with Jake Kempton upfront.
On the bench where Danny Bassett, Piers Oldland, Iven Kumanda, and Chris Wales.
Royston started quick off the blocks on 4 minutes, Ryan Frater made a pass to Rhys Hoeness who took the ball round Charlie Hutton but shot wide of goal.
G’s first shot came on 6 minutes, Jake Kemptons shot held by Ronnie Yates in the Royston goal. Two minutes later, Will Hutton broke down the right, put in a cross to Darren Wheeler on the right who put the cross back into the box and Will got on the end of it with his shot going wide of goal.
On 24 minutes, Royston broke down the left, whipped the ball into the box, G’s keeper Oneal Garnes fumbled the ball and Chris Musgrove cleared the ball away.
Godalming then came close to the first goal, Will Hutton put a great pass to Darren who put a cross into the box and Musgrove’s header just went over the Royston crossbar.
Royston came close to a goal just before halftime, a corner came in to the G’s box with Ryan Fraters shot cleared off the line by Liam Roberts.
So at half time it remained 0-0.
Another yellow card followed the break for Louis Hutton for poor tackle.
Royston started the 2nd half brightly. They made a substitution and brought on Ryan Ingrey and on 52 minutes, his strike forced the G’s keeper into a good save to his right and out for a corner.
On 62 minutes, Royston got a free kick outside of the Godalming area, Danny May fired a fierce freekick which Oneal had to parry away with Musgrove putting the ball out for a corner.
G’s then made two substitutions, Iven Kumanda replaced Darren on the left wing and Danny Bassett replacing Jake Kempton. This seemed to give the G’s more impetus to try and get a winning goal.
Iven made some great moves and had a shot that went wide of goal. Then on 83 minutes, Louis and Iven linked up well together, after a combination of passes, the ball was put out to Iven, who put in the cross to Louis Hutton who cooly slotted the ball into the goal using the outside of his boot.
Darren Wheeler then produced another moment of magic for the home team when he managed to find space out on the left wing to put in a cross deep to the far post which crept in under the bar.
It was a welcome return to Chris Wales who replaced Charlie Hutton on 85 minutes after coming back from injury. Godalming then went on and held on for a great win and three points.
