Sutton Common Rovers (H)

Godalming Town 3 – 6 Sutton Common Rovers

With the Gees third from bottom of the league and going down 1-0 at Chertsey last weekend, when needing to scrap for any points they can from the remaining games, they hosted third place SCR at Wey Court.

The Gees were without Bobby Webbe, Ben Cotton, Hakim Griffiths, Romario Hart, Lewis Lodge to name just a few in addition to Jack Howard who seems likely to be out for a few weeks yet.

During the first half the Gees seemed to be in a very friendly mood, failing to convert a good opportunity in the opening minutes. They were even more generous when the visitors won their first corner at the road end and watched in admiration as the visitors headed their first goal unchallenged.

SCR went on to score two more before Bobby Bennett (probably the smallest player on the pitch) replied for the home team with a close-range header from a free kick later in the first half.

Unfortunately, shortly after this John Bennett, who has been looking lively on his return, was taken out in a 50 /50 challenge with the visiting keeper. John came of worse, having to be subbed off later and also received a yellow card, which seemed pretty unlucky to me. Newcomer Jack May was introduced.

HT Godalming 1-3  SCR

Bobby Bennett was having a good game and early on in the second half received a good free kick wide on the left, he cut inside past the defenders and netted with a right footed shot to give the Gees the idea that they were actually still in with a shout.

Indeed, the Gees were going to make a game of it and after that disappointing first half they upped their game in the second to put the wind up the visitors for a while.

In their efforts to equalise the home defence were also playing a high defensive line, which left them open at the back and Aiden was penalised for bringing down a SCR player in the box as he went past him. SCR converted the penalty making it 2 – 4. But the Gees were not done for and Jack May brought the score back to 3 – 4 on his debut.

Gees had to throw everything at the visitors and Alex Rodrigues was subbed off allowing Piers Oldland to join the midfield and Ben Toye also joined the fray later.

But when you do that it is all or nothing and the visitors were too good up front and got another couple of goals at the death.
