Godalming Town’s poor run of form continued in Somerset as a comprehensive 4-1 defeat by Taunton Town ensured the G’s were out of both the major cup competitions.
There were changes to personnel before the long journey to the West Country with both first team goalkeepers being ruled out through injury and illness, leaving Godalming with goalkeeping coach David Blackmore as their option for the number 1 jersey.
Despite this the visitors made a good start, and took the lead when Adam Cornell nodded in a Louis Hutton free kick for his 3rd goal of the season. George Frith and Liam Roberts then had chances but the Peacocks soon levelled, Craig Veal taking advantage of some poor defending to equalise.
Taunton took just 10 minutes to take the lead with Joshua Klein-Davies finishing well past Blackmore. The G’s were on the back foot and fell further behind minutes before half time, Veal crossing to Ryan Broom who side-footed home neatly.
The hosts wrapped up a comfortable passage to the next round when a Veal miss-kick left Blackmore wrong-footed, before trickling over the line, confirming a meeting with Dorking Wanderers for Taunton at the end of the month.
Godalming look to put an end to the winless run when they travel to Ware this Saturday.
