A last gasp Warren Harris goal earned Godalming three points at Thatcham, and kept them in the title race. The Gs got off to the perfect start, taking the lead after just 4 minutes. Michael Blount was pushed in the back in the penalty area, and Scott Harris cooly dispatched the resulting penalty low to the keepers left. Blount came close to making it 2-0 soon after, but his side footed effort from a Guy Hollis throw was straight at keeper Ashley West. Thatcham equalised in the 34th minute, when Denilson Vicente rounded Jake Somerville to finish from a tight angle. The home side then had captain Charlie Hill sent off for a second booking after a tackle on Blount – who needed to be stretched off following the challenge.
Godalming piled on the pressure in the second half, but were kept at bay by a number of fines saves from Ashley West. The keeper first saved well from a Scott Harris header, before blocking a George Short strike which was then cleared off the goal line by the defender. Godalming brought on Gavin Smith and Darren Wheeler – returning from injury ahead of schedule – but it wasn’t until the 88th minute when the pressure finally paid off. A ball over the top was not dealt with by the Thatcham defender, and Warren Harris pounced, slotting the ball past West, cue wild celebrations from the team and travelling support.
Godalming now host Leighton Town on Wednesday (10th), kick off 7.45pm, before travelling to Slough Town on Saturday. A win on Wednesday will put the Gs within 2 points of leaders Rugby and Burnham.
