Worthing (A) -SSE Women’s FA Cup

Worthing 1-2 Godalming *

* Away fixture but played at Wey Court due to Worthing ground unavailable

The drama at Hereford on Saturday was forgotten on Sunday for a while as the Godalming Ladies entertained Worthing Ladies in the SSE Women’s FA Cup 1st Round Qualifying.

This was a very entertaining game as so many in Women’s football are. If you have not watched any do come and support the girls at Wey Court.

It turned out to be the visitors who had the best of the opening 25 minutes or so and were showing some threat with pace out wide on the wings. But the G’s also had some pace on the wings and with “a few tweeks” as Steve Davis put it, during the first half, the home side started to get more possession in the later stages of the first half, while attacking the road end.

The second half saw the G’s putting more pressure on the visitors, but could not convert their chances into goals.

The deadlock was broken by a scrambled goal for the visitors when Kim Ketchell in the G’s goal was left on the ground, claiming she had been impeded. But the goal stood and the G’s 1-0 down.

There on the G’s really turned up the tempo and created a number of opportunities, but the visiting keeper kept her side in it with some good saves from close range.

Then, in the middle of the second half, Toni West, a recent addition to the squad, was brought on as the centre forward and straight away she showed some of the skill she had. In the end, a good break from Megan Vincer down the G’ s left flank gave her the chance to square the ball into Toni who delivered a powerful right footed shot that gave the visiting keeper no chance.

1-1 and the G’s back in it.

From here on the home midfield took a hold on the game and within ten minutes Toni West again got on the end of a good through ball from the defence, which saw her turn her defenders inside, outside, inside and out again before she delivered another thunderous drive, with her left foot this time to the delight of her team mates.

With the G’s in front for the first time in the game it was all pretty well tied up and Toni West who appeared to have picked up a knock along with her two goals, was replaced.

A great result for the Ladies squad who look forward to the next round of the competition.
