A breathtaking Playoff Semi final culminated in Ben Johnson scoring from the spot to put Bognor into the Final.

The Gs kept an unchanged team from the previous three games, and it was Godalming who made the brighter start with Scott Harris forcing a reflex save from Craig Stoner. Dan Read then header over a Darren Wheeler cross at the back post. As expected, Bognor began to grow into the game, and Dan Beck fired a low shot which beat Kyle Merson, but hit the base of the post. After a spell of pressure, the ball dropped to Ashley Robinson who fired an unstoppable volley just inside the post to give Bognor the lead on 33 minutes.

Godalming snatched an equaliser in the 63rd minute, when Jamie McClurg’s shot fell just in front of Scott Harris, who slid the ball into the net from close range. The Gs grew in confidence, and ten minutes later they were in dreamland. The ball came to Brett Cooper 20 yards out, who fired an unstoppable effort past Stoner into the corner. Two minutes later however, the tie was all square when Terry Dodd slid the ball past Merson one on one. It was then Bognor’s turn to head to dreamland, when Steve Harper’s cross was met by Ashley Robinson, who made no mistake with the finish to put the Rocks 3-2 up. Just as it seemed that was the end of the action, Gs captain Adam Foulser popped up with a far post volley in the 92nd minute to send the Godalming team and fans into delirium.

Scott Harris struck again for Godalming 7 minutes into injury time; his shot deflecting off the defender and over Stoner into the back of the net. 5 minutes later Warren Harris was judged to have stopped a shot on the line with his arm, and was sent off. Ashley Robinson converted the spot kick to make it 4-4. The ten men of Godalming held on for the rest of extra time, forcing the game into penalties.

Robinson gave Bognor the lead, scoring his second spot-kick of the night before Scott Harris coolly made it 1-1. James Crane and Wes Harrison both then scored – but after Harper made it 3-2, Stoner guessed right and dived to his left ot keep out Ben Edwards’ effort. Dan Beck then stepped up to make it 4-2. McClurg kept the Gs in it by converting his, but Ben Johnson scored the decisive spot kick, setting up a Playoff Final between Bognor and Dulwich Hamlet, this coming Sunday.

Godalming can look back on the season with immense pride, with this performance typifying the incredible spirit, effort and desire shown throughout the season. Jon and Neil must be congratulated for putting together a side that the whole Town can be proud of.

Godalming: Merson, Hollis, Lake (Dyer), Harrison, Foulser, Edwards, Read (Palmer), McClurg, S Harris, Wheeler (Cooper), W Harris. Subs: Simeone, Cooper, Short, Palmer, Dyer.

Bognor: Stoner, Crane, Wollers, Whyte, Cobbs, Andrews, Beck, Wills, Robinson, Dodd, Johnson. Subs: Harper, Marzetti, Sheriff, Simmonds, Boyle.

Godalming travel to Nyewood Lane to face Bognor Regis Town tomorrow evening. This is the Gs second playoff semi final, after they beat another Sussex side, Worthing, 2-1 after extra time two years ago.

Godalming go into Tuesday game after Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Eastbourne Town, and Jon Underwood was pleased with the players “We were delighted with the attitude of the players once again who showed no nerves on such an important day. There was some doubt right up until kick off as to whether the game would go ahead but they didn’t let this affect them and they came flying out of the blocks yet again to really put the game beyond Eastbourne by half time.”

“We have a huge amount of respect for the Bognor management who have had to contend with a lot of issues this season (players leaving, injuries, etc) and yet remained in contention to win the league right up to the last game of the season. They will obviously be disappointed to have missed out again on automatic promotion and we hope we can do what Dulwich did there this time last season and cause a shock. They are unbeaten at home this season though so we know it’s a tough task ahead of us but we are in great form and the lads can’t wait for the game. The only thing to mention in terms of team news is that Johnnie Dyer is back in the squad (after missing Saturday due to a tooth abscess) so we are back to full strength.”

Steve Harper is the only injury doubt for Bognor, who will be missing centre back Stuart Axten through suspension.

A reminder that we are running a supporters coach to the game, please contact Glenn asap to book your seat on 07790 332587 or info@godalmingtownfc.co.uk.

Godalming swept aside Eastbourne Town at a wet Wey Court to secure the final playoff spot. With the Gs needing just a point to guarantee fifth, Dan Read settled some early nerves when a gift from the Eastbourne defender meant he applied a simple finish from close range on 11 minutes. 10 minutes later, Read scored his second as he flicked the ball past Kieron Thorp and the ball nestled in the bottom corner for his 23rd goal of the season. Thorp denied Warren Harris a few minutes later, and then Adam Foulser sliced a volley from a corner wide. In first half stoppage time, Jamie McClurg added a third for the Gs, when he struck a low shot from the edge of the area.

Scott Harris scored Godalming’s fourth with a skillful lob over the keeper. The Gs made three changes, with an eye on Tuesday’s semi final, which seemed to disrupt the rhythm, along with the worsening weather conditions. Danny Curd pulled one back for Eastbourne in the 70th minute, and Joe Summerbell added another 7 minutes later.

Godalming will now face Bognor Regis Town this Tuesday (1st May) 7.45pm at Nyewood Lane, in the playoff semi final. Either Dulwich Hamlet or Folkestone Invicta lie in wait for the winner next Sunday.

Godalming face Eastbourne Town on Saturday, in the last league game of the season. The Gs need only one point to guarantee a playoff spot, with Maidstone United being the only side that can overtake them.

Godalming have travelled to Eastbourne twice this season, with the first game being abandoned in the 89th minute due to floodlight failure. Eastbourne had been leading 2-1 at the time, with the Gs down to ten men for most of the game after Damien Smith had been sent off. Godalming comfortably won the re-arranged game 3-0, with goals from Warren Harris, Dan Read and Darren Wheeler.

At the top of the table, three sides can still win the league (Whitehawk, Dulwich Hamlet and Bognor Regis), with a point separating each of them. At the bottom, Whyteleafe need to beat Whistable Town at home, and hope that Burgess Hill don’t win – who are at home to title chasers Dulwich Hamlet.

If Godalming get the point required on Saturday, then they will be away to whoever finished second (currently Dulwich) on Tuesday 1st May. The winner of this tie will then face the winner of the other semi-final on Sunday 6th May, at the highest placed teams ground.

Whatever happens, it’s going to be an exciting day, and lets hope that by the end of it the Gs are in the playoffs!

Godalming moved within touching distance of finishing in a playoff spot after a 3-1 victory at Sittingbourne. The Gs attacked the hosts from the off, with Warren Harris forcing a smart save from the Sittingbourne keeper in the opening minutes. Godalming continued to control the opening stages, and went close again when a looping header clipped the outside of the post, and also when Ryan Lake volleyed over from 12 yards. With half time looming and the Gs yet to find the breakthrough, the ball dropped kindly to Adam Foulser after a set piece, who made no mistake from six yards, firing his shot past Adam Woodward. Things got even better for Godalming, as 2 minutes later Darren Wheeler crossed from the right, and Dan Read glanced a headed past Woodward to send the Gs in 2-0 up at the break.

An improved Sittingbourne turned up in the second half, and Hicham Akhazzan was denied a great goal as his volleyed rebounded off the crossbar. Despite an the hosts improvement, the Gs settled the game in the 66th minute, when Dan Read got a slight touch on a low cross from Jamie McClurg, which edged past the Brickie’s keeper. Sittingbourne rattled the Godalming bar again through a thunderous effort from Elie Kayembe, but Joe Nwoko fluffed the rebound, when it seemed easier to score. Sittingbourne did pull a goal back in the 90th minute, when Elie Kayembe curled a free kick from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

With Maidstone United falling to a 3-2 defeat at Walton Casuals, it leaves Godalming needing one point in their last game to guarantee a playoff spot. The Gs face Eastbourne Town at home on Saturday 28th April, come down and cheer the Gs into the playoffs!

Five star Godalming Town secured a 5-2 victory over Crawley Down at Wey Court. Godalming made a great start to the game, when a thunderous shot from Jamie McClurg after 8 minutes left keeper Mark Zawadski no chance. A dominant Godalming doubled their lead after 30 minutes when Darren Wheeler converted after Ashley Jones handled in the area, blocking a Scott Harris strike. Hassan Nyang pulled one back for the visitors just before half time when the ball fell kindly to him from a set piece.

Warren Harris restored the two goal advantage 30 seconds into the second half after beating Zawadski one on one, and the Gs pulled further into the lead when Scott Harris converted a cross from his brother from close range on 48 minutes.

Saulimane El-Assasir finished past Kyle Merson from close range to make it 4-2, but Warren Harris smashed home in the 77th minute to make it a comfortable end to the game for the Gs. Godalming are sixth on goal difference, with just one goal separating them and fifth placed Maidstone.

Godalming travel to Sittingbourne next Saturday. There will be a coach going, and as usual seats will be £10 for members and £12 for non-members. We will be leaving Wey Court at 11.15am with a pick-up at Cobham.
