Godalming Town 3-4 Cove
After some good performances recently, which for me did not bring the points that we deserved we looked forward to this match as a chance to get some more points on the board. However, we knew we would be without Adrian in goal, who has been getting better game by game and was outstanding last week, but unfortunately was not available today.
Raisan who has been a sensation at left wing back picked up a nasty injury last week, so would probably not make it. Dom also came off during last week’s game injured. Andrew Tarrent who made an impressive start last week was suspended having received apparently two yellow cards. I have no idea what either of them were for. On the good side old hands Ryan and Reegan were both back as was Arthur Chosen. In goal was Oliver Ford and another new name in Jonathan Mkonga at No9.
It all started so well for the Gs as they dominated the opening minutes, getting forward in numbers. Ben Bauchop made a great run through the middle until he was brought down just outside the area. Darren placed the ball and stood with his hands on hips awaiting the referees whistle. He then curled the ball around the wall with his magical left foot and into the top right-hand corner, as he faced it, clipping the underside of the crossbar on the way in, giving the visiting keeper no chance.
Aaron Parfitt an ex G of a couple of seasons back was at right back for Cove and wearing the captain’s armband. The home side were looking good with Jonathan (No9), Ryan (right wing back) and Jordan (left wing back) all getting past the visitor’s defence.
Another free kick further out was awarded after some more physical challenges. Ben Bauchop tee’d up the ball and hit it powerfully. The ball took a fierce deflection looping high and found its way into the net for the Gs second of the game. All inside 20 minutes of play.
Only minutes later Jonathan showed some tricky footwork attacking down the left and got almost to the goal line before sliding the ball past the Cove keeper and unfortunately just past the far post as well. Reece was doing well as always, but was getting some verbal stick and a few nudges here and there. He then got a yellow card for kicking the ball away.
Cove then got awarded a freekick wide of the Gs goal on their right. Aaron Parfitt took it and hit a low shot which sounded as if it had hit the wall behind the goal or maybe the near post. The ball bounced around in play but eventually went dead as it was clear that Oliver Ford was in a heap on the pitch and needed treatment. Fortunately, he was able to play on, but only moments after the restart, Cove got a goal back in a muddle of play where it seemed the Gs could have cleared the danger.
Darren then saw an opportunity, as only he can, and lofted a huge lob shot from just inside the Cove half. This had the visiting keeper back peddling toward his goal as the ball went over him, but he was never going to catch it when it crashed into the crossbar, to his relief.
Had that gone in we would have been 3 -1 up leading up to half time. But that is the way it goes some times. What is so frustrating is that within a minute this game which was being played at tremendous pace saw the visitors equalise the score.
Games swing one way and the other and Darren found himself struggling with a hamstring by the look of it and he was replaced by Charlie Cennel. Only a minute after that Cove hit a fairly long range shot that Oliver seemed to have covered, but it somehow crept in under the bar.
So, in the space of a couple of minutes before half time things swung against the Gs who had played so well at the start. They went in at half time 3-2 down. Jordan was subbed off at half time with a calf injury. This meant Dom needed to come on from the bench although still recovering from last week’s injury. Cove won a corner two minutes into the second half and the ball ended up bobbling around with the Gs failing to clear and Cove went 4-2 up.
Cove No 7 received a yellow card. Reece then also suffered an injury which took him off and saw Alfie Sellick join his brother Rory who has been playing so well lately. This allowed Rory to get up into the midfield and brought his energy to boost the Gs efforts up front.
Ryan Villa made a run into the Cove area before being brought down from behind. With Darren off the pitch Richie Mbele took responsibility and hammered the ball into the net from the spot to bring the score back 3 – 4. Richie has shown some tremendous skill on the pitch.
Rory was leading the charge for an equaliser and gave 110% as always. Ben Bauchop had another great game, but was brought down by the Cave No 4 with a very poor tackle which earned him a yellow card. We have seen Gs players red carded for less.
The lads did us proud again. They are young and extremely talented. I am sure that when we have all our first choice available, the points will come They are also off to Jersey next week and we wish them all well.
